CHARCOAL
We have invested in an "Exeter Charcoal Retort" to replace our old ring kiln that we used in the past. The retort is the cleanest way to burn wood and produces high quality lumpwood charcoal very efficiently.
Off-cuts of wood that are irregularly shaped or unusable for firewood are loaded into an internal, air-tight chamber. Initially, an external fire is lit which heats the retort to around 450 degrees. At this temperature, the wood starts to expel natural gases which are captured and fed back into the fire, efficiently maintaining the heat.
The finished product lights easily, burns cleanly and is 100% British
After the larger prices of charcoal are bagged, it is then riddled and the small "fines" are available for metalwork and horticultural biochar
We offer regular and large size bags as well as species specific such as 'Only Cherry' for the charcoal connoisseurs!
